A Virtual Assistant Working From Home

The first time I heard someone say "Follow your passion" I was about 10 years old.  We've all heard it.  It comes in various forms:

"Do what you love and the money will follow"
"Make your passion your paycheck"
"Do what you love and you'll never have to work a day in your life"

At the age of 10, this confused the heck out of me.  Do what I love?  Hmmm... how is lying on the couch watching TV going to get me a paycheck?  I knew enough to call 'B.S.' on that quote, even back then.

Still...I got the gist of it.  If I chose a career that I actually enjoyed - it wouldn't feel like work, and there would be a greater chance I'd be successful at it, right?  But then the problem became WHAT am I passionate about?  What am I so passionate about that I could do it all day, every day for the rest of my life, and earn a living at it too?

THAT was the harder question.
I never really did come up with a great answer by thinking about it.
I still don't have a perfect answer.

Then, enter Elizabeth Gilbert, author of the book "Eat, Pray, Love" and her latest gem "Big Magic".   Liz (oh-how-I-love-this-woman!) said the ONE thing, the ONLY thing that ever made sense to me: "Follow Your Curiosity".  Instead of desperately trying to think about what you're most passionate about - just 'follow your curiosity' instead!

There are so many people who don't know what their passion is (I was one of them!) or how to earn money from their passion.  There are others who have many passions (I am one of them!) and who aren't sure what to do next.  That tiny tidbit of brilliant advice: "Follow Your Curiosity" is a game-changer.

It was like the universe finally handing me permission to stop worrying about my damn passion so much and just explore the things I'm attracted to.  So - I started to live my life simply by following my curiosity.

  • I studied to become a health coach because it has always interested me
  • I read a book on creative writing before bed each night
  • I signed up for a food photography course just because it sounded interesting
  • I bought an adult coloring book and groovy pencil crayons so I could color for fun (CLICK HERE to see my stuff)

Here's the kicker:  I have no intention of becoming a full-time health coach, writer, photographer, or artist.  BUT:  Just by exploring these things, just by testing the waters and playing around with these things that interest me, I have improved my Virtual Assistance Business.  I've found a way to include my passions in my business.

  • My health coaching school taught me to be a way better coach to my Virtual Assistant clients
  • Studying creative writing helped me improve my blog writing
  • My food photography course made me a better blog photographer AND utilize Instagram to market my business.
  • My coloring book became a fantastic source of stress release and a way to relax after a busy workday.

So follow YOUR curiosity.  You may not know what the future holds.  You may think that cooking class, knitting club, dance lesson, or voice coach have NOTHING to do with your business...but the universe is guiding you to follow your curiosity for a reason.  So follow it.  Give it a never know when it will lead to your next AMAZING idea, contribute to your fabulous life, and help you build your Virtual Assistance business.
