"How many hours per week do you work?"
Working very few hours seems to be one of those things that business coaches and entrepreneurs use, to convince us to buy their stuff. They promise to show you how to make multiple 6-figures...while never working more than a few hours a day! Sounds amazing, right?
Scouring the internet these days you would think everyone else is making millions by barely working. But remember what your mama taught you: "If it seems to be too good to be true...it probably is."
While I can't speak for EVERY business owner, I CAN share how it works for me. The truth is: "How many hours do you work" is nearly impossible to answer because it changes so freaking much from day-to-day.
Some weeks, I literally work ZERO hours while still making some money. These would be the weeks that I am on vacation and the money I make comes only from passive income. I make money...
Let me start by saying this: Finding clients for your Virtual Assistance Business is hard. I'm kind of sick of the B.S. in the online world where every Virtual Assistant who ever lived is trying to sell you something and telling you they filled their business within a couple of weeks (to 6-figures, no doubt). It's easy to 'hide' on the internet and say whatever you want.
Yet seeing those kinds of posts (that are meant to make you buy something from someone) can leave you feeling crappy and wondering why YOU haven't found any clients yet.
I have been a Virtual Assistant for 11 years and I will tell it as I see it: It usually takes much longer than that to fill your V.A. Practice with clients. So if you've been struggling, you need to know you're NORMAL.
That said...I wanted to share some tips for finding clients on Social Media because I see a lot of newbie V.A.s making some rookie mistakes, and I'm here to share what's worked better for myself and my...
Summer is in full swing and it's always an 'interesting' time of year for Virtual Assistants. As business owners, clients, and prospects head off for summer vacays, things tend to move a lot slower in the world of online business.
So what does that mean for Virtual Assistants? On the one hand, we may be able to take a sweet, well-deserved break. Virtual Assistance can be demanding and we definitely need some sun, relaxation (and a few Margaritas) to recharge for the busy season ahead.
It can ALSO mean, we get busier as our clients off-load some of their business tasks to us while THEY soak up some sun and have some summer fun. You may be wanting to grab some of that extra work to supplement your income. If so, why not shoot a quick email to your current clients and let them know how you can help them out?
One of the things a Virtual Assistant with kids has to deal with is finding that ever-elusive ‘work-life-balance’. I’m often asked how I do it and the ugly truth is: I totally don’t.
Let me shout this one from the rooftops:
In fact, I wonder if there even is such a thing. Some days I’m glued to my computer feeling guilty about how long it’s been since I’ve seen the kids. Sometimes I wonder if my neglectful parenting is causing them any permanent damage.
Other times I’m playing ‘Peek-a-Boo’ for the 18th time while worrying that I’m not marketing my business (or hanging out with my husband, or doing 30 minutes of exercise or making a dent in ‘laundry mountain’). You totally get what I'm saying, right?
The so-called ‘Experts’ will remind you to take time for yourself…go for coffee with friends…enjoy that bubble...
If you've been avoiding raising your Virtual Assistant rates because it feels 'icky' or you're afraid to lose existing clients, know this: Sooner or later every good Virtual Assistant must face that (dreaded) moment when we have to raise our rates with existing clients.
So how do you nicely tell your clients that your rates are going up without losing all of them?
I've been coaching and mentoring Virtual Assistants for many years now and STILL one of the biggest challenges a lot of V.A.s face is not being able to find enough...or ANY clients. This week I want to share WHY I think that is. And I'm going to serve it up truthfully (and maybe sound a little harsh):
Sorry...I'm just telling it as I see it. We all know that literally anyone can wake up one day and start calling themselves a V.A. But what skills do they really have that clients are actually looking for? I cringe a little every time I see a V.A. promoting things like "Email Management" or "Internet Research". It's not that these skills aren't needed...I've done them all. But the problem is...these skills are not HIGH DEMAND. Why? Because they are easy to learn...and almost anyone can do them.
Let's be honest...my 10-year old can do Internet Research like a badass. At the risk of sounding like a harsh bitch, you...
Do you think the colors you select for your Virtual Assistant Business brand make any difference? You bet they do! Stop for a moment and think about the company UPS. Did you just picture brown? (Probably brown trucks with brown Bermuda shorts on the driver, right?) The point is, your business can become known for its color scheme and it can also have a big effect on the way people perceive your company.
You are: Pure, Simple, Classic, Flawless, Clean and Innocent.
But be careful – that's mostly the way the ‘Western’ world sees white. In the middle East white is thought to symbolize death or mourning! Not exactly how you want to represent your company.
You are: Serious, Stong, Authoritative, Powerful, Elegant, Bold, Compelling and Talented.
Go easy if you’re using black – Too much can signify...
If you're looking for a step-by-step action plan here...then you might as well hit 'ESC' and shut down this blog post immediately. You won't find the secret formula here, because I believe whole-heartedly that there is NO STEP-BY-STEP ACTION PLAN that is guaranteed to take you from zero to V.A. hero.
The way that Jane Doe started her Virtual Assistance business last year, may not work for you this year. You have incredibly different skills and talents and experiences than her. The online space changes drastically from year to year. There's different software available. Luck also plays a part when it comes to predicting success here and there too. So in a nutshell, Jane Doe's step-by-step action plan to start a Virtual Assistant business may not work for you AT ALL.
So I am here to tell you - there is no step-by-step plan, but you CAN start your Virtual Assistance practice right now, today, with one EASY step:
That 'thing'? It...
If you're not using Instagram to market your Virtual Assistance business, you're missing out on BIG opportunities! With over 1 BILLION monthly active users, Instagram is THE place to be to engage with potential customers. And, HULLOOOO... INSTAGRAM MARKETING is a pretty dang good service you could be offering to your clients as well!
Doing a crap-ton of research and taking courses on Instagram marketing opened up some surprising facts for how you can use it best in 2019. Here's what I discovered:
ENGAGEMENT matters more than FOLLOWERS
Shoot to interact with your followers rather than just accumulate them! Likes, shares, and comments on your content will give you more influence than having thousands upon thousands of un-engaged followers.
VIDEO is QUEEN in 2019
Currently, videos get 2x the number of comments on Instagram than still images.
Post ONCE or TWICE per day.
The Instagram algorithm (the thing that decides how often your posts will get seen!)...
(I say that even though there is 3 feet of snow on the ground here. I am desperately hoping Mother Nature gets her act together soon.)
The season of Spring is notoriously associated with a fresh start. Many of us dive into the act of 'Spring-cleaning', vigorously de-cluttering closets, shining windows, and partaking in that once-a-year scrub under the fridge. Spring is the perfect time of year to do a little tidying up in your business as well. I'm not talking about the kind of business overhaul that requires months of time and oodles of cash to complete - just a handful of simple fixes that will freshen up your Virtual Assistance business and give you a shiny new perspective over the coming months. Here are 5 simple edits you can make right now to boost your sparkle factor:
1. Update Social Media Profiles. When was the last time you added your latest skills and experience to LinkedIn? Or...
